Description

The German withdrawal. Noreuil (beyond Vaulx-Vraucourt and near the Hindenburg Line), showing the slope down which the 50th Battalion advanced on 2 April to the seizure of the village, an occasion of stubborn fighting. One of the German strong posts was in the cemetery. A simultaneous advance was made on the opposite slope of the valley by the 51st Battalion. The Hindenburg Line K which is not shown, lay in the far distance to the right of the picture. Australians who fell in this vicinity were buried in this cemetery. Note the barbed wire entanglements in the foreground.
