Description
Signal Engineers, with a reel of cable, leaving a Signal Office on Westhoek Ridge, in the Ypres Sector, to lay a surface telephone line to a forward unit, during the battle of Zonnebeke. Buried cable routes were mainly relied on, but when these failed through shellfire, surface lines were run out as a temporary measure until communication by the buried lines was restored. Identified, holding the reel of cable on the parapet are, Sheppard (left), and Moore. Standing in the trench, grouped together, left to right: Dodswell (back to camera); Wills (right arm on hip), and Parnell.
