Description
Members of A Company, 30th Battalion digging a sunken mule track on Westhoek Ridge. Following the Australian attack on 20 September, the whole area was in such a devastated state that supplies to the forward troops were conveyed by pack animals. Where tracks were made over observable ground cuttings were excavated, both to prevent observation and to protect the pack trains. Identified, left foreground is 3765 Sergeant (Sgt) John Edmund Buttsworth (killed in action 8 April 1918); 2069 Corporal W C H Jackson (in front of Buttsworth); 2158 Private Sinclair, behind Jackson; 1196 Sgt V H Drake (killed in action 22 June 1918) (to Sinclair's left, facing camera); Lieutenant (Lt) S H Fisk (killed in action 12 October 1918) (to Drake's left, facing camera with cigarette in mouth); 233 Sgt S Murdock DCM (Lt 1 May 1918, killed in action 3 September 1918) (extreme right).
