Description
The morass between Alma and Springfield, in the Ypres Sector, following heavy rain on 12 October 1917. This photograph taken three days later, just after a heavy area strafe by the enemy, depicts the condition of the valley west of Alma, a treacherous slough, which became a death trap for many wounded Australians. Seen here is Captain G H Wilkins, the Australian Official Photographer, who is following the tape leading to the front line.
