Description

Members of the 5th Division crossing by ferry to the southern side of the Somme Canal near the village of Vaux-sur-Somme. Identified, is 3216 Private A. F. Parry, C Company, 58th Battalion, second from the left. The ferry was used for communication between B Company, Headquarters, 58th battalion, and No. 8 Platoon, which was in trenches in front of Vaire on the other side of the Canal. The other platoons of the Company were on the same side as Company Headquarters. When the enemy advanced on Hamel, the whole Company crossed the Somme to assist in the battle. The white building in the background is the Headquarters of 3rd Company, 58th Battalion.
