Infantrymen of the 3rd Division digging a new reserve trench system near Mericourt, in France. While the front line troops engaged the advancing Germans and prevented their rush on Amiens, other troops prepared further defensive positions upon which to fall back. There was, however, no retirement on the part of the Australian Corps.
