Description
A paint camouflaged 8 inch No. 2 gun of the 1st Australian Siege Battery, at Birr Cross Roads. 518 Gunner Harold Alexander Triggs (later killed in action on 5 July 1918, near Lamotte in Nieppe Forest) is standing by, awaiting the order to fire, during the ranging of the battery on 26 September 1917, prior to the attack carried out on Polygon Wood on 28 September 1917. The dial sight has been removed in order to save damage on shock of discharge. This image is copied from a print of a paget plate negative. This image can not be reproduced in colour.
