Description

The German offensive, 1918. In the foreground, immediately south of the River Ancre, is the village of Treux, which was seized by the 3rd Australian Division upon its arrival in this area. On the extreme right is the village of Dernancourt, where the 4th Australian Division stopped the German advance when an attempt was made to resume it on 28 March 1918. The Germans held the village and the Australians the railway line (see no 462). In the final attack, made by three divisions on 5 April 1918, the Germans managed to attain a position half-way up the distant hill, their advance falling short of the old British casualty clearing station. Craters of 5.9 enemy shells show in the foreground.
