Description
Two veterans, Driver Steve Murphy of the 22nd Battalion, and the horse 'Anzac' in charge of which he sailed from Australia with the original 22nd Battalion on 8 May 1915. They served throughout together, 'Anzac' being one of the very few Australian horses to last out the campaign without becoming a casualty. In 1918 the loss of horses in the Transport Section was very heavy owing to the fact that the limbers used to be taken nightly almost into the front line in order to save men the fatigue of carrying parties. Losses from shellfire were a common occurence. 'Anzac' had a full share of these dangers and on demobilization was sent over to England and sold.
