Description

A street in the southeast end of the town where the Headquarters of the 33rd and 35th Battalions (entrance, first door on left) and office of Lieutenant Colonel. H. A. Goddard who was in command of operations, were located during the battle of 4 April 1918. A group of soldiers stand at the door to Headquarters Clerk's Office, 35th Battalion. Seven shells came into that building and Headquarters was transferred to house also occupied by Headquarters 33rd Battalion. The troops employed at Villers-Bretonneux front were 33rd, 34th, 35th and 36th Battalions and 9th Machine Gun Company, the whole under command of Colonel Goddard. The 35th Battalion had held the line since 30 March 1918 and bore the brunt of the bombardment and attack. The 33rd Battalion were in support and were at once involved in the fight and 36th and 34th Battalions arrived after the morning attack and were placed in position of readiness for counter attack. In the afternoon attack the 36th Battalion were used to counter attack at Hangard Wood and the 34th Battalion to reinforce the front line on the north of the town. The 9th Machine Gun Company were used in front line.
