Description

These trench mortars at Mont-de-Merris captured by the 11th Battalion were still too near the front line to be removed with safety. Major A. M. Phillips DSO, and Lieutenant L. G. Riches MC (pointing) are seen reconnoitering the position. The enemy held the country in the distance through the hedge. The enemy morale was very low at this period during which the 1st Division troops had daily raids, these sometimes in broad daylight.
