Description
Members of the 15th Battalion in one of the captured machine gun positions in Pear Trench at Hamel, from which the Germans did much deadly shooting in the morning during the attack on the village. Following the interruption of the barrage for a brief space, Pear Trench filled with the enemy, who caused many casualties to the attacking troops as they came over the hill on the skyline. Tanks smashed the machine gun positions and the Australians with the Americans met the Germans hand to hand. This is one half of a stereo image. The full stereo image is held at E02623A.
