Description
From the heights near Sailly-le-Sec, from which the Australian Official Photographer took general views of the battle on 4 July 1918, the whole battle ground of Hamel was clearly visible, and about 7.30 am, when this picture was taken, the enemy could be seen massing near the Cerisy-Hamel Road to counter attack. They advanced in mass along the La Motte-Sailly-le-Sec Road deployed behind Accroche Wood, but their effort to drive back the Australians collapsed.
