Description
A view of the wood which occupied a commanding position forward of Villers-Bretonneux. On this day German forces still occupied and strongly held the rear of Monument Wood and the ruins shown in the background (right). The wood was several times attacked and raided before its final and complete capture by the 7th Australian Infantry Brigade in a full dress attack on 17 July 1918. Note the trench in the foreground (far left). This is the left hand image in a two part panorama. See E02639P for the combined image.
