Description

A dead German soldier lies in a bay in the communication trench leading up to Pear Trench near Hamel, the day following the battle in which the Australians of the 6th, 4th, and 11th Infantry Brigades captured the village and the important positions surrounding it. From Pear Trench particularly the attacking infantry were heavily fired upon, but the suddenness of the attack overwhelmed the enemy. Many Germans were killed as they were clambering out of the trenches. Another dead soldier lies near the top of the trench wearing a red cross/medical armband.
