Description

Outdoor portrait of four officers of the 28th Battalion, AIF. Identified on the left is Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Harold Bernard Walford Ridley from York, Western Australia. A 19 year old orchardist when he enlisted on 18 May 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private (service number 1061) with B Company from Fremantle, Western Australia on 29 June 1915 aboard HMAT Ascanius. He served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front where he was promoted to 2nd Lt on 1 June 1918 and to Lieutenant (Lt) on 1 October 1918. Lt Ridley returned to Australia on 2 June 1919. Second from the left is Lt James Hopkins, MM. A 27 year old bushman from Broome, Western Australia when he enlisted on 25 February 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private (service number 96) with A Company from Fremantle on 12 July 1915 aboard HMAT Ascanius. He served at Gallipoli and on the Western Front where he was awarded a Military Medal on 8 November 1916, promoted to 2nd Lt on 9 December 1916 and to Lt on 1 March 1918. Lt Hopkins returned to Australia on 5 February 1919. Third from the left is Captain (Capt) Cyril Hunwick Pugh from Perth, Western Australia. A 23 year old clerk when he enlisted on 8 September 1914, he embarked for overseas as a 2nd Lt with A Company from Fremantle on 29 June 1915 aboard HMAT Ascanius. He served at Gallipoli where he was promoted to Lt on 1 December 1915 and on the Western Front where he was promoted to Capt on 12 March 1917. Capt Pugh returned to Australia on 1 June 1919. On the right is Lt Arthur Collins Loveday from East Fremantle. An 18 year old clerk when he enlisted on 1 March 1916, he embarked for overseas as a Private (service number 4777) with the 12th Reinforcements from Fremantle on 17 April 1916 aboard HMAT Aeneas. He served on the Western Front where he was promoted up through the ranks to Sergeant and then appointed a 2nd Lt on 22 October 1917 and Lt on 1 March 1918. After being wounded in action on 11 August 1918, he died of those wounds the next day, 12 August 1918 and is buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
