The Somme Valley and the slopes captured by the Australian troops during the opening of the great ...
The Somme Valley and the slopes captured by the Australian troops during the opening of the great offensive on 8 August 1918. The attacking Australian Brigades in the first assault were the 11th, 9th, 5th, and 7th and through them the 4th, 12th, 8th, and 15th Brigades passed for the final phase. The advance for the day penetrated about 10,000 yards. On the left is the village of Chipilly, from which the Australians were, for a time, open to severe flanking fire because the British attack on the north of the river was impeded by heavy fighting. Note several dugouts and structures on the slope (far left). This is a digitally combined composite panorama made up of four separate images. It is only available as a digital print. The four images are also available separately at E02903, E02904, E02905 and E03032.
