Description
German prisoners, the leading ten of whom were officers, being escorted by a Mounted Provost Corporal of 3rd Australian Division from the 9th Brigade Headquarters, Vaire Wood in the opening phase of the offensive on 8 August 1918. The tall hatless officer in the centre (marked with an X at his feet) expressed in excellent English, his great admiration at the surprise effect and success of the operation. The party was captured early in the morning in a thick fog in Accroche Wood by units of 9th Brigade. The prisoners are being taken to the prisoners of war (POW) compound at Corbie.
