Description

An interesting series of photographs illustrating the accurate fire of an enemy 5.9 inch gun in the vicinity of Chuignolles, when the Australian troops were forcing their advance over this area. This photograph shows a nest of dugouts on the ridge being shelled by the gun, and E03128B shows troops moving near the left group of three trees on the crest of the hill in full view of the gun situated in Nameless Wood, 3,000 yards distant. The German observers caught sight of our troops making towards dugouts a little further to the left and immediately ranged on them. The next shell, the burst of which can be seen in E03128C, fell with great accuracy, destroying the centre tree and causing several casualties. This sort of thing happened several times in a short interval, proving it to be good shooting and not coincidence. The position of the gun was 'spotted' by the Australian Official Photographer, Captain G H Wilkins, MC, who notified an English artillery unit and a little later the enemy gun was silenced.
