Description
An illustration of the open warfare conditions which prevailed during the offensive along the Somme in August 1918. The picture shows a gun of the 4th Brigade of Australian Field Artillery in action near Clery. Shells are piled up beside the two guns, only one of which is in use. The enemy put up a stiff resistance in this area from 29 August to 1 September against the Australian troops.
