Description
The remains of a smashed machine gun at the Riqueval entrance to the St Quentin Tunnel. The concrete dugout was 40 feet deep, leading from the top of the canal bank down to a sleeping chamber, and dugout on a level with the canal. There were several posts of this nature in the vicinity, and from their positions a great field of fire was commanded. The number of empty cartridge cases seen in the picture indicates that the gun had been put to considerable use against the attacking American and Australian troops.
