Description
The steep, wooded banks of the St Quentin Canal, in the Hindenburg Main Line, looking towards Bellenglise from near Riqueval. This canal, hiding innumerable machine gun posts and snipers in its banks, and honeycombed with dugouts, was an almost insuperable obstacle in the storming of this line. In places it was necessary for the troops to don life belts, jump into the canal, and scramble up the bank in the face of heavy fire. The position shown was captured on 29 September 1918 by the American and Australian troops.
