Description
German machine gunners who fought to the death with their gun near Estrees, on 3 October 1918, when the battle for the Masnieres-Beaurevoir line was commenced. The position in the foreground was captured by the 5th Australian Infantry Brigade, and that beyond it was the scene of the 22nd Battalion's last fight. The area was thickly littered with German dead following the action. A 150mm howitzer and four 77mm guns were captured by the Battalion in the valley seen on the left. The operation ended on 5 October, with the taking of Montbrehain, and marked the last action fought by the Australian Infantry on the Western Front.
