Description
View from St. Denis Mill, near Peronne, looking towards Anvil Wood, over the ground attacked by the 53rd Battalion against heavy opposition on 1 September 1918. During the operation, the Battalion suffered from flank fire poured upon it from St. Denis and the Peronne ramparts. A Battalion runner, carrying messages over this bullet swept area, conducted himself with such conspicuous gallantry that he won the VC.
