Description
The countryside around Mont St Quentin and Peronne. In the background is the railway embankment where the 53rd Battalion were dug in immediately prior to their attack in that area on 1 September 1918. They successfully held this position while under fire from Mont St Quentin. When Mont St Quentin was captured later in the day, and with the partial capture of Peronne, the way was paved for the complete capture of Peronne and a continuance of the advance the following day. Note several shelters which have been set up against ruined buildings. This is the left hand image in a two part panorama. See E03753P for the combined image.
