Description
View from the position of the German machine guns on the ramparts of Peronne. From this pointion a view could be obtained of Mont St Quentin, the slope of which is seen in the right background of the photograph. On the left is the railway embankment, where the 53rd Battalion were dug in during the time that Mont St Quentin was occupied by the enemy, and from which they commenced the attack upon Anvil Wood under heavy flank fire from the Peronne ramparts on their right. In this attack they were compelled to make a wide detour following the railway line in the right of the picture, as the open ground in the centre could be swept with machine gun fire from the enemy on Mont St Quentin and St Denis as well as from the ramparts.
