The grave of an unknown Australian soldier - thought to have been buried by the Germans on the edge of the railway embankment north-east of Dernancourt. The soldier had probably been killed in the heroic fighting of the 12th and 13th Australian Infantry Brigades against practically four German Divisions on 5 April 1918. Six .303 inch British rifle bullets are arranged in the form of a cross on top of the grave with two British Mills bombs, or grenades, on either side of the cross of bullets. A small wooden cross has been placed at the head of the grave and carries the following misspelt inscription, 'An Unknown Austrailian Hero'. This photograph is unfortunately a double exposure, when viewed in landscape a corrugated iron roofed shed is also visible.
