Description
A Mark V Male tank, B33, near Bayonvillers, put out of action by a direct hit at point blank range. The background is obscured by the smoke of the battle. At the time the photograph was taken machine gun and shell fire were very heavy. This tank was making for Bayonvillers to mop up when it was hit, and the picture was taken shortly afterwards. Other tanks were lumbering over the battlefield supported by bayonet and bomb parties, and while the tanks squashed the machine gun posts, the infantry dealt with the machine gun crews.
