Description
Fromelles, France. 11 November 1918. View of the concrete observation posts erected in the ruined church and adjacent buildings, from which the low country before the village was dominated. It was in this area that the Battle of Fromelles was fought on 19 July 1916, marking the first entry of the 5th Division into battle on the Western Front. The fight was a costly one to the Division. The system of trenches, as it was supposed to be, which formed the objective turned out to be water filled ditches, this, coupled with the exposure of the Australian flank to concentrated fire and the withdrawal after several hours fighting in such cirumstances, caused over 5000 casualties to be sustained.
