Description
A German observation post in a tree near Fromelles. This observation post was used at the same time that the 5th Australian Division was located in trenches on the flats of Fleurbaix. From this post German forces could see the preparations leading up to the costly and fruitless attack at Fromelles on 19 July 1916. A building can be seen on the right side of the image and debris in the foreground. Note the makeshift ladder that leads up to the observation post.
