Description
The ruins of a German fortified house east of Clery-sur-Somme. During operations on 30 August 1918 this fortified house was one of the positions in the eastern outskirts of Clery that had not been cleared and caused considerable trouble to the 10th Australian Infantry Brigade. It was captured by the 40th Battalion who subsequently cleared up the whole of Clery and with the 37th Battalion dug-in to the east. The capture of this area was the preliminary necessary for the attack upon Mont St. Quentin. A field gun (right) and timber debris are visible. Note two crosses (middle) in the background.
