Description
A water filled ditch (foreground) which formed part of the final objective of the 5th Australian Division (Div) in the disastrous attack on 19 July 1916. Reported to be a system of trenches, these ditches, as they were discovered to be, were flooded with water and proved a trap. Ordered to withdraw because the flank troops were unable to come up, the troops of the 5th Div heroically fought for some hours in the flooded area against great odds, including a decimating fire upon their flank. A brick chimney (background) marks the site of Delangre Farm. Note the barbed wire entanglements (centre).
