Description
Shell damaged buildings in the village of Estrees, taken from the parapet of the trench shown in the foreground. Estrees formed the objective of the 56th Battalion in the exploitation of the Nauroy-Gouy Line of the Hindenburg System. The village was heavily fortified and strongly garrisoned by German forces. On 1 October 1918 the 54th and 56th Battalions captured the village, despite considerable opposition. Two steel fortifications are visible on the far left of the image. Lying on the ground are German steel helmets, a German gas mask, a British or Commonwealth Short, Magazine Lee-Enfield rifle with fixed bayonet, (foreground centre) and several piles of wire. (Note an unidentified male civilian standing near a door).
