Description
Shell damaged buildings on the Lagnicourt battlefield. It was over this area that the Australian troops in April 1917 made a desperate, but unsuccessful, effort to penetrate the Hindenburg Line at Bullecourt. In the following month they succeeded in an action which was described by Sir Douglas Haig in his despatch as 'a most gallant feat of arms'. Note what is probably a camouflaged dugout in front of the damaged buildings.
