View of the Lagnicourt battlefield. The image shows the extent of the momentary German advance on 15 April 1917, when, attacking on a six mile front between Hermies and Noreuil, with Lagnicourt as the centre of the onslaught, the Germans succeeded in penetrating the Australian forward line. They captured the guns of the 2nd Australian Field Artillery, which had been brought to advanced positions, and for two hours held them until a rush of Australian troops retrieved the position and drove the German forces back to the village. When the guns were recaptured it was found that of the twenty one pieces that had been in German possession, only five had been damaged. Both sides took several hundred prisoners in this action, but the German losses were heavy and nothing was gained. The shell damaged village of Lagnicourt is visible in the background (left). This is a digitally combined composite panorama made up of two separate images. It is only available as a digital print. The two images are also available separately at E04583 and E04584.
