Description
Near Longueval, France. 24 March 1918. The German offensive, 1918. British troops (probably of the 35th Division, which this day filled the gap on the old Somme Battlefield) waiting by the roadside near Longueval, while the transport of the retiring army passed. Although the wheeled traffic is keeping to the right of the road, a block has occurred, and the leading Germans are only a few miles distant. The 35th Division, after three days' continuous fighting, was eventually relieved by Australian Divisions brought hurriedly from the north.
