Description
The 'one man one trench' method adopted by the troops of the 4th Australian Division the first night they took over from the retiring troops of the British 9th Division. The German advance was stemmed at this point. On the ground next to two of the trenches are rifles, with bayonets, and kits. Note an unknown object in the trench in the foreground and a small shovel on the left.
