Description

Bois de l'Abbe, France. 7 May 1918. View of the Chateau La Maison de Bois l'Abbe, situated about a mile on the Amiens side of Villers-Bretonneux and on the main road. It was used as a Headquarters by successive support battalions on the right of the Australian Corps Front, the French Headquarters being in the Bois de l'Abbe near by. The basement of the Chateau was used as an advanced Dressing Station and the outbuildings were occupied by billets. Although shellfire partially destroyed the wood in the vicinity, the Chateau remained practically undamaged. Note the soldier in the foreground.
