Description
Near Dernancourt. 27 April 1918. Looking towards Dernancourt and Ville-sur-Ancre from a front line position occupied by Australians at Marett Wood. Several Germans could be plainly seen in the distance - out of range of machine gun fire - when the photograph was taken. During this period, although constant raids were taking place a little to the left of the picture in front of Morlancourt and over the area shown, the enemy was frequently seen crossing the fields during daylight. At the junction of the roads and the hedge there was an enemy trench mortar battery, which was periodically shelled.
