Description
Unidentified British crews gathered around three 9.2 inch camouflaged howitzers which were supporting the Australians forces on the Somme. The camouflaged boxes in front of the guns are known as dirt boxes. These were filled with soil and attached to the gun to act as a counterweight to the force of the blast and keep the gun in position. Note in the background, in front of the tree (centre, right), a timber structure, probably an observation tower.
