Description

The old hangars in `no man's land'. On the right can be seen the ruins of a second aerodrome, in which the enemy earlier in the month had established a machine gun strong post. On the night of 13 April, the 40th Battalion rushed this post and after a fierce bombing duel and hand-to-hand fight, the Australian party returned. Thereafter the Australian trench mortars and artillery continually bombarded the position, and patrols reconnoitred its vicinity each night. An attack by the 37th Battalion on the night of 21 June, routed the garrison. Ten Germans were killed, seven captured, and the strong point wrecked. The two soldiers on the left are unidentified.
