Description

An unidentified Australian officer and two female civilians (right) viewing the ruins of the Chuignes Gun, a 15-inch German naval gun captured by the members of the 3rd Battalion during an Australian advance in this vicinity. The gun was found separated from its carriage and the great barrel blown off at the breech, most likely wrecked by a deliberate explosion. The gun, in action since early June 1917, could fire a one tonne projectile at least 38 kilometres and was used to bombard Amiens. Note in the background on the far right a group of unidentified soldiers, possibly American and Australian, gathered in and around a truck. This panorama is one of a series taken by the Australian War Records Section with a 'Cirkut' camera. This image is only available as a digital print.
