Description
The ramparts at the north east corner of the town of Peronne (visible in the background) taken from the edge of Le Quinconce Cemetery. On 1 September the 53rd Battalion along with members of the 56th Battalion left the line located at the cemetery and attacked in the direction of the grass grown ramparts (visible mid ground) near the town. In this position the troops were subjected to heavy machine gun fire. They then skirted the northern edge of the moat and attacked through Anvil Wood, killing many German soldiers and taking a number of prisoners. This area is also represented in a painting by official war artist A H Fullwood, 'The Attack on Peronne', held at ART02503.
