Description
A group of soldiers, including an Australian, British servicemen and servicewomen, and French soldiers, gathered with several civilians on the stairs outside the entrance to 13th century gothic Cathedral de Notre Dame. During the intensive German shelling of Amiens a high wall of sandbags were erected in front of this entrance to secure it against the bomb and shell fragments. The cathedral miraculously survived the First World War, and later the Second World War, unscathed.
