Description
View of the extensive destruction of village buildings and the surrounding countryside. In the foreground are the remnants of Elm Trench. Mont St Quentin was a natural fortress, reinforced by German engineers, and was thought to be impregnable. Its capture on 1 September 1918 by troops of the 2nd Division, who faced almost insurmountable obstacles, ranks as one of the most brilliant achievements of the war. Note in the middle background ruined brick walls. This panorama is one of a series taken by the Australian War Records Section with a 'Cirkut' camera. This image is only available as a digital print.
