Description

Captain (Cpt) James Francis (Frank) Hurley's composite image which was variously titled "Australian aeroplanes in battle formation" and "Off on a bombing raid" as it was displayed in either London or Australia. The components of this image are, from left to right: B01597; B01598; B01594; and B01595. The prints hanging below are, left to right: E01210; unidentified; and B01560. Cpt Hurley used some of the same planes in his other composite, "A Hop Over" (see E05988A, E05988B, and P01438.001).

This photograph - or a version of - was displayed at the Grafton Galleries, London, in May 1918 and later at the Australian War Museum exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney. The original caption in the guidebook reads: Australian aeroplanes, in battle formation, setting out to bomb the Turks, in Palestine.
