Two German armoured cruisers, possibly the Scharnhorst and the Gneisenau. Each carried eight 8.2 inch guns, six 5.9 inch guns and 20 3.4 inch guns, and had a displacement of 11 600 tons; their respective speeds were 21 and 24 knots. Of the principal German warships stationed in the Pacific, these were the most important.
