Description
Medical officers perform an operation in the sick bay aboard HMAS Australia, while two other men look on. Seated behind the patient's head is Surgeon Lieutenant Commander William J Carr, who is holding a mask over the patient's face with one hand and a tube, possibly containing chloroform or another anaesthetic, in the other. Note that Surgeon Carr is not wearing a surgical gown.
