Description
A group of Australian Pioneers preparing sandbags for use in constructing dugouts behind the trenches. Some of the men are loosening the soil with picks; others use spades to shovel it into the sandbags. The Pioneer units in the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Divisions carried out engineering duties but also acted as infantry when required.
