Informal group portrait of eight unidentified infantrymen of the 2nd Australian Division. The group have stopped to chat and smoke a cigarette while moving away from the front line. The four men to the left are carrying a full kit, with their bedrolls thrown over their shoulders. The first Australian battalions moved into the front line on the Western Front on 7 April 1916.
